It started from a very personal place -\na need to process grief. In 2021, I had just begun an MFA in Contemporary\nPerformative Arts at the University of Gothenburg, but because of the\npandemic, everything was online. Since my project was connected to Iran, I\ndecided to travel there. While I was in Tehran, my grandmother suddenly\npassed away from Covid. That house wasn\u2019t just a house; it was like my homeland. She\nwas the root I came from. Being there, memories came flooding in - I could feel\nmy whole childhood around me. I didn\u2019t set out to make a film. I was just moving through grief, trying\nto make sense of things. I filmed some of it with a laptop camera - very raw,\nvery DIY. Later, during editing, it started to take shape. I sent the footage to my\nfriend Ella Bergstr\u00f6m, a composer I hadn\u2019t even met in person at the time. She\nimprovised music while watching the film. I felt deeply connected to the women who came before me. Death didn\u2019t feel particularly scary or sad anymore, it was another layer of life - they both felt like part of the same ongoing dance. My understanding of what it means to make art in this moment is\nshifting drastically. I dont have a language that can adequately capture the\n\nscale of devastation we\u2019re living through. Right now, I\u2019m searching - for a\nlanguage, a space, a way to comprehend and respond to the situation we\u2019re in.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the same time, I\u2019ve been deeply affected by the intense censorship faced by\npro-Palestinian voices in Germany. Exhibitions and performances have been\ncancelled, prizes withdrawn, funding cut, and artists criminalised simply for\ncriticising the Israeli government\u2019s ongoing crimes and genocide in Gaza. The <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Archive of Silence<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> platform offers a powerful and comprehensive overview of\nthis silencing. It\u2019s something I\u2019ve felt personally and collectively, and it\u2019s\nshaping how I think about artistic responsibility.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In February 2025, I began initial research for a new video installation during the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">IEA Artist-in-Residence<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> program at Alfred University in New York. The work\nengages directly with the experience of artistic expression under conditions of\nwar, genocide, censorship, and repression. It explores how the body, sound,\nand fragmented memory can hold and transmit truths that are otherwise\nsilenced or erased from dominant discourse.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In parallel, I\u2019m working on an artistic research project focused on a forgotten\nfeminist lineage within Kathak, the traditional South Asian dance form I was\ntrained in and now teach in Berlin. This aspect of Kathak - where women used\ndance as a space for resistance, expression, and sensuality - was systematically\nerased through colonial, patriarchal, and religious interventions. Reclaiming\nthis lost history, and reawakening it through politicisation and radicalisation,\nfeels both urgent and necessary.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What connects these projects is a shared impulse: to trace what has been\nsilenced or erased - whether in the present or in the past - and to find ways of\nspeaking to it, with it, and through it.
