How did Self Portrait and Other Ruins come about? <\/span>Self Portrait and Other Ruins<\/span><\/i>?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Honestly, it wasn\u2019t planned at all. It started from a very personal place -\na need to process grief. In 2021, I had just begun an MFA in Contemporary\nPerformative Arts at the University of Gothenburg, but because of the\npandemic, everything was online. Since my project was connected to Iran, I\ndecided to travel there. While I was in Tehran, my grandmother suddenly\npassed away from Covid. It was a shock - the doctors thought she would\nrecover.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Going back to her home, where I grew up, and finding it empty... that was\nincredibly difficult. That house wasn\u2019t just a house; it was like my homeland. She\nwas the root I came from. Being there, memories came flooding in - I could feel\nmy whole childhood around me. I started dancing, almost instinctively, with\nthose memories, with those ghosts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

So the film emerged from that process?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Exactly. I didn\u2019t set out to make a film. I was just moving through grief, trying\nto make sense of things. I filmed some of it with a laptop camera - very raw,\nvery DIY. Later, during editing, it started to take shape. I sent the footage to my\nfriend Ella Bergstr\u00f6m, a composer I hadn\u2019t even met in person at the time. She\nimprovised music while watching the film. It became a kind of long-distance\nduet - me dancing in my grandmother\u2019s home, her composing in her studio.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

What did the process reveal for you?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

When I danced, the boundaries between time, life, and death seemed to\ncollapse. I felt deeply connected to the women who came before me. Death didn\u2019t feel particularly scary or sad anymore, it was another layer of life - they both felt like part of the same ongoing dance. Maybe that\u2019s why the film feels\nalive, even in its imperfections.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Your work avoids representing suffering as spectacle - how did you develop this approach?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I never set out to show suffering - I dance to understand it. That\u2019s how my\ndance journey began. I found a way to process rage and pain through\nmovement. Dancing lets me fully feel what\u2019s happening in my body and around\nme, embody it, and slowly transform it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In this work too, I moved through a wide range of emotions -pain, anger, love,\ngratitude. As I danced, those feelings began to shift and change color.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This year, when we turned the film into an installation at Vagon gallery, it\nopened a new layer. Showing it in an exhibition space felt like stepping back\ninto that house, that emotional world. It allowed both me and the audience to\nmove through those memories in a more immersive, embodied way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

What are you currently working on, and what are your plans going\nforward?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Over the past two and a half years, as genocides have unfolded in Gaza,\nSudan, and Congo - and as we witness the ongoing destruction of human lives\nand ecosystems globally - I\u2019ve found myself existentially questioning my role as\nan artist. My understanding of what it means to make art in this moment is\nshifting drastically. I dont have a language that can adequately capture the\n\nscale of devastation we\u2019re living through. Right now, I\u2019m searching - for a\nlanguage, a space, a way to comprehend and respond to the situation we\u2019re in.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

At the same time, I\u2019ve been deeply affected by the intense censorship faced by\npro-Palestinian voices in Germany. Exhibitions and performances have been\ncancelled, prizes withdrawn, funding cut, and artists criminalised simply for\ncriticising the Israeli government\u2019s ongoing crimes and genocide in Gaza. The <\/span>Archive of Silence<\/span><\/i> platform offers a powerful and comprehensive overview of\nthis silencing. It\u2019s something I\u2019ve felt personally and collectively, and it\u2019s\nshaping how I think about artistic responsibility.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In February 2025, I began initial research for a new video installation during the <\/span>IEA Artist-in-Residence<\/span><\/i> program at Alfred University in New York. The work\nengages directly with the experience of artistic expression under conditions of\nwar, genocide, censorship, and repression. It explores how the body, sound,\nand fragmented memory can hold and transmit truths that are otherwise\nsilenced or erased from dominant discourse.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In parallel, I\u2019m working on an artistic research project focused on a forgotten\nfeminist lineage within Kathak, the traditional South Asian dance form I was\ntrained in and now teach in Berlin. This aspect of Kathak - where women used\ndance as a space for resistance, expression, and sensuality - was systematically\nerased through colonial, patriarchal, and religious interventions. Reclaiming\nthis lost history, and reawakening it through politicisation and radicalisation,\nfeels both urgent and necessary.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

What connects these projects is a shared impulse: to trace what has been\nsilenced or erased - whether in the present or in the past - and to find ways of\nspeaking to it, with it, and through it. I don\u2019t pretend to have answers, but I\u2019m\n\ncommitted to asking questions honestly, and to using dance and film as tools\nfor remembering, resisting, and bearing witness.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
