At the Artist Talk with Maja Simišić, we discussed the methods she uses to address existing gender and class issues through her creative work.

We talked about how Miss Diaspora was created and what she has seen in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

We found out who wins the race for the visa. And, of course, how sexy Bosnia really is.

Maja Simišić is a multimedia artist who focuses on everyday battles and finds ways to turn them to her advantage. The methods she uses to dismantle existing gender and class issues in her work are built upon an analysis of the expectations set by modern social structures and historical narratives. Maja Simišic presents challenging topics with the ease and humor inherent to her character. Of an exceptionally individualistic nature and rooted in identity and identity politics, the artist prompts the audience to reevaluate what lies before them. With a touch of absurdity and a heap of satire, she assists us in realizing that all our realities are interconnected, and that it takes understanding and a willingness to embrace differences to effect real change.

The conversation was conducted by Jovana Trifuljesko, an independent curator and art historian.

This event was supported by the Public Call for Audience Development by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Republica of Srpska
